Slow Food in Canada is delighted to announce the creation of a new convivium in Atlantic Canada — Slow Food Miramichi River. This group of food enthusiasts is eager to start promoting good, clean and fair food for all in this region of New Brunswick, via a number of activities and events.
Slow Food Miramichi River had its beginnings in the summer of 2016, when a small group of local food industry workers, including several local chefs and cooks, a vegetable grower, and a food security professional, met to discuss promoting and improving the food scene in the Miramichi region. They covered topics as diverse as food tourism, environmental sustainability, food security, farm-to-table dinners, and the local economy. With such a background, it’s no wonder Slow Food and its principles of celebrating the pleasures of the table and promoting local cultures and food traditions soon became the core subjects of discussion.
Slow Food Miramichi River hopes to rally community members in an inclusive, fun and welcoming way. Goals for 2017 are to expand its membership base throughout the Miramichi region by educating the community on the benefits of the Slow Food movement and lifestyle.
Events planned to date include a Monthly Speaker Series and outings to local and regional food producers, artisans, and restaurants. Slow Food Miramichi River will hold get-togethers and the Monthly Speaker Series on the second Monday of each month at various locations within the area, beginning in a few weeks on December 12.
