A terrific day was enjoyed by over 60 current and potential members of Slow Food Nova Scotia Mainland on June 24, 2012. Organized by Jack Schoon, Peter Darnell, Terry Vassello and a team of dedicated local volunteers – fun bartender award goes to Kent Robinson – we learned, ate, smelled tasted and touched on a variety of topics and foods. The gathering was held at the Indian Point Community Hall, site of previous Indian Point Mussel Festivals.
The AGM portion of the meeting kicked off the day. Approval of the minutes of the 2011 AGM and a leaders report from Michael Howell were the first orders of the day. Michael touched upon various SFNS Activities including but not limited to:
- Slow Motion Film Festival 2011
- Our Taste education activities including: Pig in a Day, to repeat later this year
- Inclusion in the consultative stage of the NS Childhood Obesity Prevention Strategy
- The Edible Schoolyard, DAHES and school garden growth in Nova Scotia
- The Slow Food Canada National meeting in Edmonton
- Vandana Shiva’s visit, our Board Strategic Retreat Day
- The fantastic success of the SFNS Spring Supper
- Terra Madre 2012, including announcing Delegates Lia Rinaldo, Renee Lavallee, Chris Velden and Patricia Bishop, and Congress Delegate Scott Whitelaw
We elected a new Board: returning members Michael Howell, Sheila Stevenson, Chris Velden, Peter Jackson, Peter Darnell, Lia Rinaldo, Scott Whitelaw, Jack Schoon, Leo Christakos, Margo Riebe Butt and New Treasurer Mike O’Keefe.
We thanked Retiring Directors: Dela Erith – founding director and treasurer, Anna Magera, Rob Smith and Mary Sue Waisman. Jeanita Rand (Fox Hill) gave a report and update on Mary Sue Waisman and the assembled group concurred to wish Mary Sue well in her recovery.
Our Accountant Teresa Rooney gave our financial report indicating that we were in good fiscal health. There was some open discussion on Slow Motion Film Festival and how to evolve it and mitigate the risk that Slow Food NS takes on as the organizer of the event. The board will discuss at upcoming meetings the potential ramifications of Slow Motion becoming a separate entity that would work in partnership with Slow Food NS.
We then took a break and enjoyed watching Chef Chris Velden demonstrate how to break down a large fish – in this case a 96 lb halibut which returned later at lunch!
The group then returned to participate in a facilitated session (Thanks to long time member Joanne Linzey for this and Sheila Stevenson for assistance) where breakout sessions were held to focus on the thoughts of members in determining a future for SFNS. Those ideas were synthesized by Joanne and Sheila and annotated. We will provide a summary of that activity at a later date.
Then we enjoyed a luncheon prepared (in the rain under the trees adjacent to the Hall) by Chef Terry Vassello, Matthew Krizan and Chris Velden and some helpers. Smoked scallops, oysters, the halibut returning grilled with pesto and a variety of delicious salads and sides provided by locals. Wines from various Nova Scotia Wineries were available too.
As we enjoyed the lunch, Michael welcomed CSF chief Dave Adler who told us about Off the Hook and the CSA experience. It was an entertaining and informative talk and demonstration about how we can better our procurement of fish with respect to the earth and the fisheries.
All in all a great Day!

Michael Howell
