Back to our Prairie Roots and Fruits!
Johwanna offered a fruit preserving session in August with a focus on our local prolific Evan’s Cherry. What an incredible day!
She was able to procure most of our fruit from a local organization called Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton (OFRE) which was also brilliant and is an initiative created by one of our Slow Food Edmonton members, Amy Beaith. Johwanna picked up the vegetables at our famous local Italian Center Shop which another one of our members, Teresa Spinelli, owns.
Below, our new president, Kathryn Joel, assist Johwanna at the pickling class.
We love to see our men and children out to these classes and they do come! It was amazing what four year old Evelyn accomplished in the time she helped out.
Having a good time, meeting new people, and eating great food are critical elements woven into each of our events! Johwanna supplied the snacks with some of her 2011 preserves: Tomato Jelly and Rosé Jelly, below. There was not a crumb of anything left. Delicious and novel.
Both sessions were held at the gorgeous auxiliary hall kitchen of St. Josephat’s in Edmonton and each was followed by a traditional Ukrainian dinner made by the perish ladies. This is how they make money for their organization so it was a very mutually beneficial arrangement!
The meal, the newly acquired knowledge and the bottles of preserves in the bag on the way home were each the cherry on top!
