Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.
Slow Food believes food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and change the world as a result.
Slow Food has been active in different regions in Canada for more than 15 years, with a particularly strong presence in Montreal, Ontario and British Columbia. During this time, Slow Food has become one of the most important bilingual food organizations in Canada.
Today, more than one thousand members belong to thirty convivia which span the country from Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island to Vancouver Island and even Whitehorse in the Yukon. Slow Food membership in Canada has been stable at around 1,300 members since 2008.
Slow Food in Canada is the coordination team of the Canadian Slow Food convivia network.
