In the heart of southwestern Ontario lies the vibrant County of Wellington. Previously the home of two Slow Food conviviums (Guelph and Elora), these forces have now combined to create a new Slow Food stronghold in central Canada.
Presenting a quaint mix of proud rural farming communities, tourist-rich villages, and the city of Guelph, Wellington County exemplifies some of the best of what Ontario has to offer. Fly-fishing in bountiful and rapid flowing rivers, swimming in deep gorges, limestone architecture, and touring rich artist communities, Slow Food Wellington County is becoming a new vibrant source of what The Wall Street Journal once coined the ‘Greenpeace of gastronomy.’
One of our main agendas locally is to mentor youth in the principles and values outlined by the greater Slow Food organization. This notion of mentoring our youth around how they experience the world of food around them is key to affecting good change. No one needs much convincing that our current food system has, to this point, done our youth a great disservice. Rates of diabetes and obesity are on the rise and a firm response to the current food system and its outcomes will be key if we wish for our community to be healthy and engaged in their world. On this particular front, we pool membership fees in such a way that we can offer a scholarship to youth that exemplify these efforts and will act as leaders among their peers.
Also, not taking for granted the fact that we neighbour the agricultural research efforts at the University of Guelph and the global food conglomerates that buddy up to this particular institution, we have made it our mandate to hold these organizations accountable for the work they do manipulate our food system. Locally, we are keen on banning the commercial use of all genetically modified crops as well as the current widespread use of systemic insecticides that are annihilating honey bee/pollinator populations in our county.
A passionate group of chefs, farmers, producers and informed citizens, we are thrilled to be aligned to a global movement that celebrates biodiversity and sustainable food systems.
