Food Day Canada – August 4th, 2018

August 3, 2018 by

Food Day Canada is Saturday August 4th. It is an important day where every Canadian is challenged to celebrate and eat Canadian food!

Food Day Canada began in 2003 as The World’s Longest Barbecue, a massive, Canada-wide response to the sanction of Canadian beef exports by our largest trading partner and the dramatic hardship it imposed on our agricultural community. The World’s Largest Barbecue was a huge success and has evolved into Food Day Canada, an annual mid-summer celebration, always held on the Saturday of the August long weekend, when we share Canada’s rich culinary heritage, our delicious northern bounty and the best managed food system on the planet.

Food Day Canada seems just as relevant this year as we’ve entered a trade war. Anita Stewart founder of Food Day Canada says that “Nothing is more patriotic — or more environmentally responsible — than feasting on our local northern bounty. Even though, for years eating locally has been a movement and a way of life for many Canadians from every corner of the nation, this year is a watershed moment. If there ever was a time to eat like a Canadian, cook like a Canadian and shop like a Canadian, it’s now.”

Slow Food in Canada urges its members to get involved and join in the celebration.

Getting involved is easy to do! Head to a Food Day Canada restaurant (Slow Food in Canada members are organizing notable Food Day Canada menus at the restaurants Miijidaa Cafe + Bistro, From Scratch a Mountain Kitchen, or Les Jardins Sauvages).

Or you can plan your own party absolutely anywhere!
