On May 4th, 2013 Slow Food Nova Scotia leader Michael Howell presented Food Historian and author Marie Nightingale with the 2013 Canadian Food Hero award, which were announced in late April in Osoyoos BC at the Slow Food Canada National Meeting. The presentation of the award took place at the Slow Food Nova Scotia Spring Supper, an annual major fundraising event with 150 people at a seven course dinner with ten Nova Scotia Chefs.

Marie was the Eastern Canada regional winner of this new award, which recognizes people that have made a significant contribution to the food movement or food history of Canada. Ms. Nightingale’s seminal book Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens is a thorough food history of Nova Scotia and a much beloved cookbook that is likely to be found in almost every home in the Province. In addition, Marie was the Food Editor of the Halifax Chronicle Herald for many years and then the food editor of Saltscapes Magazine for over a decade as well.  She has also published a number of other books regarding food and entertaining.
